thanks ms. canada!

king of the radishes!
my first thought upon seeing this box was that it contained 1 huge radish. superior in size and taste, and ruler of all other radishes.
my second thought was that the radish king had been kidnapped from it's box.
thirdly, i wonder if the radish king knows princess tomato from princess tomato in the salad kingdom.

in the meantime...
right right- another post that's not so about salad. i have a terrif salad spot coming up, but (please see title) i just had to post this: my latest attempt at some pad kee mao variation!
this one was really good, and real close to the taste i associate with the dish!
plentiful on the chili, but ran a little short on basil. also, i threw in some chin kong choy and skipped on the bean sprouts.
the only not-awesome point of the experience was watching a poorly dressed hipster try to hit on the cashier at A Grocery. he went so far as to inform her that he "even eat(s) with chopsticks"...searching for love in all the wrong places. actually, i don't know that this idiot has a soul-mate waiting anywhere, and he definitely didn't make me feel great about being the next white guy in line.
oh well, at least i can dress myself and cook...and just for full disclosure, i ate this food with a fork. jus sayin'.

the greenest leaf...
ok, even though i've been slightly sensitive and emotionally compromised lately, i swear this lady next to me in the produce section of the grocery scoffed at my selecting green leaf lettuce...she picked out something fancier i believe...frizzz-aye!
what's the word looking for to describe this...

"FRANCH"...!!!
here's the disturbingly self explanatory concept of "FRANCH" dressing...

grilled romaine?
it is good! it's kinda crispy...
sorry guys, but this is the norm for the photos here. not complimentary? eat it! i did...
seriously yall, everything i've tried @ ayc is extremely rad and fun. the menu mainly consists of small plates ranging from $7-$9 a pop, and more than worth it. we eat small..always, but well at the yacht club. just go.
find out about it:

we call it "cool slaw"...
cole slaw is one of those dishes that just shows up for dinner sometimes…kinda like a boring-ass friend with unoriginal commentary and bad ideas that are easily brushed off.
there’s the table without cole slaw, and the table with cole slaw…it looks the same to me.
the jazzpanther threw together this yummy cole slaw the other day. why is it yummy?
green peas!
all creamy cole slaw should include green peas until the world ends.

late nite salad fusion: papaya meets wedge...
the jazz panther and i recently found ourselves at an undisclosed thai bar with a late nite menu. given little in choice in the vegetarian department, we decided to give their papaya salad a try.
apparently, they've chosen to model their version after the wedge salad, replacing the traditional chunk of iceburg lettuce with a mountainous, full 1/3 of a head of green cabbage, which towered over a kind of gradient marsh of shredded papaya and carrot.
it wasn't that bad...plus we were asking for it...i found that drinking helped.
the best part of the experience was an extra smooth lounge set by a young woman with a keyboard, which eventually transformed into an equally soothing karaoke performance by two young men.
i felt that the flash from my camera could've been easily misinterpreted as an ill-spirited move, so i opted for illustrating the dish.

not sure if this'll work...
could these be used in a salad?
i feel i've fallen short of living up to the effort it must've taken these guys to put beef in this product.
halal!

onion thingz...
these thingz are actually really tasty. good for you? hell no!
and yes, as mysterious culinary self defeatist and whatnot that could be said, i COULD make a salad item in this style that would be exxtremely better and better for thee, but i don't have the time...i have the ingredients...better oil, better onion, better pepper, better garlic...just no time. ha, but i guess i have time to write this, so...
screw it! these were $.99 at the insanely SUPER market.
eat it.

Good Larb!
Oh Larb...where to begin. The delicious Thai tofu salad with the unattractive name
Every place that offers the dish has their own recipe. My favorite larb comes from Bloomington Indiana's Esan Thai Restaurant, and few have lived up to their version...especially in Los Angeles. Recently though, the Jazzpanther found a terrific version of the dish at a little spot right on Sunset Blvd called Mae Ploy.
Really, really great flavor and texture. The shallots aren't as prominently pronounced, but as a whole, it's fairly light and compares in most every respect to the Esan Thai style that we have been deeply missing.
The other menu items i've tasted are also rad, so it seems like a good deal across the board...except soup. I've heard the soup isn't...good.
but...
Larb!

Marie's Premium Super Blue Cheese Dressing...
yes! another rad score at the grocery store! marie's dressing were all on sale and i picked the "premium super blue cheese" w/ 25% more blue cheese for about $2. i am sooo cheap about a seemingly arbitrary list of things. salad dressing might be among them. sometimes.
anyway, this dressing is very good. it's ultra creamy and doesn't have the "bite" usually found in blue cheese dressings. i really like the "bite", but this works terrifically with just a great taste taking the product for a home run (notice the baseball in the background?).
it's also titled "blue" cheese, instead of "bleu" cheese.
americanized and comforting probably fit here. but what's wrong with that on occasion? this perfect for those of us who like creamy dressings but are too uppity to say we flat out like ranch.
thanks marie!
*the additional 25% more blue cheese makes it, so don't buy the one with the normal amount of blue cheese.

Dusty’s Bistro’s Scheherazade...
Dusty’s Bistro’s Scheherazade - baby greens, hummus, eggplant caviar, tabbouleh, kalamata olives, garbanzo,
pine nuts, raisins & mint yogurt dressing...
Dusty’s is an inviting little place in Silverlake with a lot of nice lamps (lamps which you will probably be able to read more about sometime in the future on our upcoming A>A>A> Blog...)
Jazz Panther and I went there not so long ago and took up our charming server Scott on the Scheherazade.
This is a fairly incredible salad...actually more like a meal for tiny birds like us. Essentially the Scheherazade plays something like placing a host of Mediterranean favorites (already prepared well on their own) over fresh baby greens and pouring on an appropriate amount of their mint yogurt dressing, which is fortunately not so heavy on the mint.
This is a large salad, not to be trifled with, so if you ever happen to order it at Dusty’s, it might be advised to put some strategic planning into effect when considering what you may order to go with it.
Dusty’s is cozy and nice and this salad is terrific. We had already started messing up the Scheherazade before I had the op to take this photo, I zapped it. We’ll go back. Hope Scott’s there.
